20 January 1998
Implemented and tested today were a set of spam=relay blocking filters in the ruleset for KC's sendmail (8.8.8)
Although many spam originating sites are blocked using access lists in KC's main routers (that connect to international and local sites) the spammers keep appearing from new ip addresses as quickly as they can be blocked.
This next stage in the fight against spam now prevents KC's mailer from being used as a relay site for spam. There are plans over the next few weeks to get sendmail (and smail) on some of the ISP and business sites connecting to KC, upgraded to recent versions of sendmail and smail that support anti-spam measures.

19 January 1998
Walker Co-Partnership, Architects, connect today to KC via Centrex ISDN

14 January 1998

The first of the two new Primary Rate ISDN circuits installed late last month was commissioned today. This is connecting to a Cisco as5200 providing another 30 dial in lines to KC.
These two new PRI are connected to Ellerslie exchange and (I am told by Telecom) this is much less loaded and has never yet reported to users the infamous 'busy due to overloading' message.

28 December 1997
A major power outage occured at KC about 11pm 27th December and lasted until midday today. Apparently a power transformer melted somewhere in the power feed to the West Auckland area causing a surge that took out the junction boxes atop power poles to many homes and businesses in the area.
KC was one of the unfortunate locations that suffered an exploding junction box and hence no mains power.
All of KC's main routers, ntus, modem server and dns system stayed alive as they are connected to the battery backup system. The news server, web cache server and a modem rack all remained offline untl the mains power was restored.

The last new connection of 1997 was completed today with the commissioning of a 64K MDDS link from a school to KC.

26 December 1997
In the last two weeks of 1997 there have been eight new connection enquiries, with two connecting just before Christmas and at least three more expected in the first week of January. Of these, four are via ISDN (two Centrex), three are DDS and one a leased line connection. All are dependant on Telecom installations.

The first major move away from Waikato University was completed today with DDS circuits terminating in the stacked wideband DDS - SWA/KCHN being moved directly to KCCS' SWA circuits in Auckland.
This move involved the 256K DDS to Napier, a 128K DDS to Bopis and two 64K DDS, one to Cambridge and one to Tauranga. The DDS between KC in Auckland and the University was reduced to 512K and will be further reduced to 256k then 128k as other DDS and radio connections are moved.
The circuit to Waikato University should be shutdown by mid January 1998.

15 December 1997
Lanscape upgraded their 48K MDDS to KC to a 64K DDS connecting to a timeslot in one of KC's stacked wideband circuits. Near all of the exiting 48K MDDS to KC have now upgraded to either 64K or 128K dds, taking advantage of the reduced cost of a 64k DDS because the KC end of the DDS terminates in stacked wideband.

11 December 1997
Early December is becoming a very busy period for the KCCS network with a major redesign of the network outside of Auckland. In a major change at Hamilton KCCS is moving out of Waikato University to a new location in central Hamilton. This has been prompted by a change in business conditions in dealing with the University and will mean that KC will no longer use the University a its main access point for local traffic to other NZ sites. This brings to an end nearly four years of KCCS using the NZ Internet Exchange (NZIX).
Four radio connections to KCCS's router in the University will now be redirected to the central Hamilton location, the stacked wideband DDS will also be moved to this new location automatically taking with it the 768K DDS to KCCS in Auckland, the 256K DDS link to Napier and four other 64K and 128K dds links to Tauranga, Rotoroua and Hamilton.

KCCS will now be using the connection to Telstra for local traffic as well as the 128K ISDN link to Iconz. The link is soon to be upgraded to a 2meg circuit so that KCCS, Iconz and Iprolink will have a 2meg interconnect in Auckland for exchange of Usenet news and other local traffic. Already local traffic to other Telstra connected sites is directed to Telstra.
Other short term plans include a 1Mbit link between KCCS in Auckland and Wellington and a Centrex Primary Rate ISDN in Hamilton for business ISDN connections.

Igrin connected to Xtra for internet services today.
Igrin had been connected to KC since mid 1996 and has steadily grown over the last 18 months with data link bandwidth increases from 64k to 256K.
With a need for more bandwidth Igrin has connected via a 320K DDS to Xtra which uses Netway for internet services.

27 November 1997
The DDS link to Napier was upgraded to 256K this morning.
A recently installed PRI ISDN at Bopis was brought into service today, connecting to a Cisco as5200 modem server with 24 K56flex modems. This is one in a series of expansions planned for Bopis.

17 November 1997
KC's main data link to Telstra was upgraded to just over 1.5Mbits/second today. This increase is to provide additional international bandwidth for nine new business customers connecting via DDS and ISDN to KC for Internet services.
Further planned increases in bandwidth for this link to 2Mbits/second should occur from December through to March next year as demand continues to rise for international bandwidth at KC.
New MDDS connection - MWK Ltd changed today from a dial up ISDN link to KC to a 64K MDDS connecting into KC's stacked wideband DDS.
A new ISDN connection was commissioned yesterday from MPL connecting to KC via a Zyxel router.

A new ISDN link to Orix was tested and commissioned today. Orix use a Cisco 1003 ISDN router.

12 November 1997
Repeated power outages this morning (due to stormy weather) and a major blackout about 5am took out some of KC's services for an hour or so. Most seriously effected was a Cisco 2522 multiport router that failed to restart, its power supply was dead and had to be replaced. This took out several 48K MDDS connections into KC between 6am and 10am. At 8:45am a replacement power unit was obtained and the 2522 was available again just after 9:20am.
KC's core routers, a Cisco 4500 and 3640, and ethernet switch were not effected as they connect permanently to a UPS.

8 November 1997
Photo Warehouse connect to KC today via ISDN using a Cisco 1003 ISDN router provided by KC.

7 November 1997
In the first of two upgrades to KC's data link from Auckland to Hamilton an extra four 64k channels were added to take the link from 512K to 768Kbits/second. The next upgrade to 1Mbit is planned for mid-November and requires redeploying several customer DDS connections to a new stacked wideband DDS being installed in the next week.
This bandwidth increase has become necessary as local traffic volumes (ie to and from NZ internet sites) has substantially increased over the last three months and international traffic from KC, via KC's Telstra connection, to Tauranga (128K), Napier (256k) and several 64K connections, have all steadily increased this year.
This link to NZIX at Waikato provides some 80% of KC's NZ internet bandwidth. Further expansion of the 128K ISDN link to ICONZ (and from there to other ISPs) is planned for the near future with a 2Mbit Megalink being the most likely connection.

5 November 1997
ATL connected to KC today via dial up ISDN using a Zyxel isdn router.

2 November 1997
The Cisco 2800 ethernet switch at KC was replaced this morning by a new Cisco 5002 switch. The 5002 is configured with fourteen ethernet ports, two 100baseT ports and twelve auto selecting 10baseT/100baseT ports.
This is the final step in upgrading all of KC's existing core network routers and servers to fast ethernet. There is now only the Cisco 5200 modem server on a 10baseT switched port, this server will be replaced in January 1998 by a Cisco 5300 server that has a fast ethernet network port.

29 October 1997
Today, NZNET increase their dds connection to KC to 256Kbits/second.

25 October 1997
Today, KC's news server was offline for several periods of about 20 minutes to allow upgrades to the server. These included extra main memory from 128Megs to 256Megs then a later addition of another 128Megs to give 384Megs in total. An additional 4.3gig wide scsi disk drive and a 12X CDrom drive were next installed and the Raid array adjusted to include the new disk capacity. Finally a new CPU card, a 250Mhz UltraSparc2 replaced a 200Mhz UltraSparc1 cpu.
The memory and disk additions were necessary to allow the news server to keep up with the continuing growth in usenet news volumes. The CPU change is to allow the replaced 200Mhz cpu to become the second cpu in a new Axil UltraSparc system recently acquired to replace the Sun Sparc 4 currently used as kcbbs.gen.nz

23 October 1997

Centrex ISDN business connection enquiries continue to arrive at KC almost every day. With five pending new connections, all awaiting installation of BRI from Telecom, ISDN is the fasted growing area of internet connections for KC. Although it looked as if TalNET and their short range radio connections would offer a low cost and faster service than ISDN, it appears the recent news reports of TalNET's parent company ceasing trading has encouraged some existing TalNET customers to look again at Centrex ISDN.
At least one company moving from a TalNET ank to a new ISDN connection to KC has cited technical difficulties with their TalNET link where IP routing issues have not been solved.

3 September 1997
A small increase in international bandwidth is added to KC's overall bandwidth thois morning. An additional 128K was made available as private bandwidth for a new DDS customer who required guaranteed international access.
KC's new Cisco 5002 ethernet switch is replacing the Cisco 2800 switch this week. This is the last item of hardware for the planned upgrade of KC's local ethernet to switched 100baseT between all network devices
The routers in use at KC, a Cisco 4500 and Cisco 3640, and the Sun servers all have 100baseT interfaces.

1 September 1997
Enquiries in August to KC in Auckland have seen a significant increase in the number of new ISDN connections, With the new Centrex Primary Rate ISDN at Newmarket, KC has been able to connect five new Centrex BRI and two non-Centrex in Auckland during August. Further enquiries for Centrex ISDN during August have a further three ISDN installations underway which should complete during September.
The most surprising development has been the surge of interest in new ISDN business connections in Tauranga. For near six months there has only been one ISDN BRI connection to Bopis from The Zones, a computer dealer in Tauranga.
However, in August there have been seven enquiries for new connections, six ISDN and one DDS. Of the ISDNs two have already connected and a further three are in the process of installing BRI and acquiring routers.
It also seems that Bopis will install a WaveLan radio connection, possibly connecting to one of more City Centre businesses.

August has also seen the largest number of new individual user accounts on KC. New users are normally only accepted when recommended by existing users and since KC offers no installation, training or ongoing helpdesk facilities there are normally very few new users each month. There have been between 300 and 400 users since 1993 with an average of 330.
It is not known why an additional 27 new users have joined KC in August although several computer 'consultants' now arrange connections to KC while providing support for their clients.

KC's involvment with PlaNet in a new ISP at Warkworth has been very pleasing as within 2 months some thirty users have joined up. It appears that offering a local ISP operation at Warkworth is attracting users from Xtra and other national ISPs.

29 August 1997
Another ISDN connection in Tauranga from a local school, there are now three ISDN connections and a further three going through the process of having BRI installed to Bopis in Tauranga.
A Primary Rate ISDN is now being installed by Telecom, delays in starting this installation were due to the lack of suitable cables in Spring Street, a new cable is the first stage of the PRI installation.
A Cisco as5200 modem server with 24 56K modems is ready for Bopis, in meantime further Basic Rate ISDN will be installed as needed.
This as5200 will replace a Cisco 4000M temporarily installed at Bopis which connects a DDS link to Hamilton and two BRI.

27 August 1997
New computer for KC, An Axil 200E Ultrasparc system was delivered this week from BCL. This will replace KC's current Sparc 4 110 (Sparcserver 1000) system which is becoming too loaded.
The new Ultra will host KC's web pages and provide all the existing facilities for the KC Network currently handled by the SS4.

25 August 1997
KC experienced its worst failure of DDS services today. Just before 2pm this afternoon the 2meg DDS to Telstra and the stacked wideband DDS to Waikato both failed. When Telstra and Telecom were contacted the SWDDS to Waikato was recovered within 15 minutes but the 2meg link took near 5 hours for the fault to be found and corrected. Then within minutes of the link to Telstra coming up the SWDDS to Waikato failed again. This took a further hour to repair and included an after hours callout to Waikato University to reset KC's Cisco 3620 router.
The faults were traced to a switch patch faulty cable at Mayoral Drive exchange in Auckland. Telecom have now promised a complete investigation to discover why the fault occured and why it took so long to locate and repair.

This episode has highlighted the futility of having KC's main data link and the backup link as Telecom DDS. Never before have both links been down at the same time causing complete disconnection from the internet.
Within the last few weeks KC has been changing to BGP routing management to facilitate automatic fallback to use alternate routing in the event of link failure. Although this is not yet fully installed it is doubtful that anything could have been achieved while both links were out..

Telstra will be moving KC's data link to use a radio modem once the fibre connection between Telstra Auckland's internet exchange (in the Stock Exchange building) and the Skytower is installed. Other connections via Primary Rate ISDN circuits will also be looked at as a temporary data connection if all else fails.

22 August 1997
Two new Centrex isdn connections to KC have been installed this week, one to Aim Direct via a Borderware Firewall system and the other to Networx who provide internet connection services.

20 August 1997
Midland Internet in Hamilton connect to KC via a 64K link. This is to provide a connection for some of their dial up customers and a backup service although most of Midland's traffic still uses their link to Netway.

15 August 1997
The Cisco 2503 router at Bopis in Tauranga was replaced today by a Cisco 4000M router. This upgrade is to allow additional Basic Rate ISDN connections, there is an 8 port BRI interface controller installed in the 4000M. A second BRI was installed by Telecom this week and a third BRI is likely to be installed in early September. These are needed to connect business ISDN until Telecom are able to provision a Primary Rate ISDN at Bopis.

8 August 1997
The DDS link to BOPIS in Tauranga was upgraded today to 128K from 64K.
This link connects to KC's stacked wideband DDS at Waikato University, Hamilton. This upgrade is part of a planned series of changes that will see hardware and router changes at BOPIS.
New commercial customers at Bopis connecting with dial up ISDN and with radio (Wavelan) connections have required this additional bandwidth.

5 August 1997
A 64K DDS to Kiataia was commissioned today. This had been moved from a business in Kaitaia to Kaitaia Training Centre to provide internet connectivity for the centre. There are now two internet nodes in Kaitaia, the first installed there was a point-of-presence for Igrin, the Whangarei based ISP, who have a terminal server and modems based in the local hospital.

4 August 1997
KC's primary internet link via Telstra was upgraded to 1152K today. This provides the KC network with four main internet connections - 1152k to Telstra, 512K to NZIX, 256K to BOTHG and 128K to ICONZ. Most international traffic uses the Telstra link, the 256K international circuit is a backup and the 512K NZIX and 128K ICONZ link distribute national and local traffic.

1 August 1997
KC's Centrex Primary Rate ISDN at Newmarket was commissioned today. A Cisco 4500M router is connected to this PRI and this connects via ethernet to KAON Technologies ethernet LAN.

A new Cisco as5200 modem server was delivered to day to KC, this is to be installed in Tauranga at BOPIS.

22 July 1997
Routing problems. Throught last weekend and to early this morning there are still intermittent routing problems occuring. The last was just after 1am this morning when routing disappeared for about 15 minutes and all traffic ended at an MCI router in USA.

A fast ethernet (100Mb/sec) controller was delivered today for KC's 3640 and installed/tested this afternoon. This was the last of KC's routers waiting for a fast ethernet interface. An 8 port fast ethernet hub card in KC's Cisco 2800 ethernet switch is providing fast ethernet ports until the new Cisco 5002 switch arrives. This is now expected in early September.

21 July 1997
This month, July, is the last month Acorn Computers connects to KC for Internet Services. The recent decision by Acorn UK to appoint product distributors instead of maintaining their own Acorn presence in overseas countries will mean the closing of Acorn Computers in Newmarket, Auckland at the end of July. Acorn have connected to KC since 1991, initially by dial up UUCP and from January 1994 via a 48Kbit MDDS link.
Kaon Technologies, who also connect to KC, will be moving into the Acorn offices in Newmarket and KC will be taking over an installed but unused Primary rate ISDN in these offices, using this to provide a 256K link to KC in west Auckland and to provide connection for additional Centrex ISDN services.

20 July 1997
A 90 minute power black out over a large area of Auckland took out some of KC's systems and services today. Starting just after 6pm, KC's backup power system took over and services continued for nearly an hour. After this the various systems progessively shut down leaving only the ethernet switch, Cisco 4500 and 3640 routers on line to provide uninterrupted services on KC's two stacked wideband DDS and the Centrex ISDN.

Other DDS connections on 48K and 9k6 DDS closed down and a frame relay service also closed. Most of these 48K DDS are each already planned to move to a 64K channel in KC's new stacked wideband DDS. The frame relay atil circuit to KC that uses a 64K MDDS to Netway in Auckland will also be moved to a 64K channel. A major reason for this move is to provide continued DDS connection at KC in the event of power outages.

19 July 1997
Problems continue with periods of total routing failure to many sites in USA. Today there were two periods of approximately 15 minutes when no USA site could be contacted. Traceroute showed that there was nothing beyond Telstra Sydney's router. Faults have been logged with Telstra although it looks as though the InterNIC failure with root name servers could still be the real problem.

17 July 1997
Webmasters connect via radio to Waikato University. Webmasters become the fourth company to connect into KC's local radio LAN and Cisco router for Internet services at Waikato University.
Web Innovations, Tauranga, make a connection to KC's Internet LAN at Bopis, in Tauranga. This is the second dial up ISDN business connection to Bopis and two more are currently proceeding with ISDN installations for Internet connections to Bopis. These new connections will be using channels from the new Primary Rate ISDN at Bopis, installation is expected in mid August and will use a Cisco as5200 mode server to provide 24 ISDN/v34 dial up lines and six dedicated ISDN channels.

10 July 1997
Another Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) was made available to KC today. This is located in Newmarket and is connected to the Mayoral Drive exchange. This PRI will be part of KC's Centrex ISDN with about twenty channels available for customer connections. It will connect to a Centrex PRI at KC to initially provide a 256K connection to KC, channels will be reserved to allow this to move up to 512K in the future. A Cisco 3620 router with E1 PRI interface will connect to this new PRI.

Two new ISDN connections from companies in Tauranga were confirmed today and will connect to existing BRI at the KC site in Tauranga. Plans for this site will see a Cisco AS5200 modem server,Primary Rate ISDN and a Sun Sparc4 installed there before the end of August 1997. The main data link from Tauranga to KC's stacked wideband DDS at Waikato University has just been increased to 128K and with these new ISDN connections will increase to 192k in the near future.

5 July 1997
A new 64K DDS to Marlborough PlaNet at Blenhiem in the South Island was commissioned today. This used one of the three available timeslots in KC's first stacked wideband DDS. mlb.planet use a Cisco 1601 router and were previously connected to Wellington PlaNet. This move has become necessary due to the increasing traffic load mlb.planet was imposing on wn.planet who are connected vai a compressed 64K DDS to KC's node at Napier. Both PlaNet ISPs should now have significant better throughput.

3 July 1997
A new Cisco AS5200 modem server was installed at Auckland PlaNet today, initially with 24 modems available via a dial-up Primary Rate ISDN. This will soon be upgraded so that all 30 ISDN channels have modems available.
Another Cisco AS5200 arrived for North Shore PlaNet today and is being configured for installation in mid-July when ns.planet's PRI ISDN is installed. Initially this will have 24 33k6 modems.
The first circuit into KC's second stacked wideband DDS was installed this morning, a 64K DDS link. Three more DDS are expected to be installed in the next two weeks.

1 July 1997
Two new business customers for KC confirmed connections today, a 64K DDS to Kaitaia in Northland and a Centrex ISDN connection to Logical Methods Ltd. KC is supplying routers for both of these new connections.
During June 1997 there have been eighteen enquiries to KCCS about business connection either via DDS, ISDN or radio connection. Ten of these have now already installed connections to KCCS or are in the process of doing so and a further two are waiting on Telecom feasibility studies. Five enquiries have connected to other ISPs or are in the process of doing so, two because they are within short range radio distance with line-of-sight to their ISP.

Further stats for June show that KC's international connections were on average 72% loaded with inbound traffic, 24% loaded with outbound traffic and saturation on inbound was a total of 9 hours 22 minutes for the month.

24 April 1998
Today a new 2Mbit link between KC and Iconz was installed and commissioned.
This fast data link has been on order from Telecom since last year but due to many delays the installation is only completed now. This link replaces a Centrex ISDN (128K) link and will be used to provide much improved local connectivity as well as faster distribution of usenet news.
This is the first of three planned local links from KC with a possible two more using Centrex ISDN connections.

21 April 1998
Maxtel Software Ltd, Glen Eden, Auckland connected to KC via ISDN today.
This will be the third isdn which will connect into a new Centrex ISDN PRI from Glen Eden exchange.

14 April 1998
A major reorganisation of KC's hardware and data links took place over the easter weekend.
A new upgrade to the firmware and DSP software in the Microcom digital modems in KC's Cisco 5200 modem server has resulted in a much improved service on the K56flex modems. Many reported problems where certain makes/modems of modem would not connect have now been resolved.
(especially Motorola k56 and Zoom K56 modems)
The previous connect success rate of 94% has increased to over 99%. KC's main dial in services are now via two Primary Rate ISDN connected to Ellerslie exchange. Both these PRI connect to the CIsco 5200 providing sixty K56 modems.
The Cisco 5200 routers at PlaNet Auckland, North Shore PlaNet, Bay of Plenty Internet and Blenheim PlaNet were also upgraded with this software

A backup dial in service with 12 MICA modem is available via a digital modem card installed in one of KC's Cisco 3640 routers. This uses a PRI connected to Mayoral Drive exchange.

17 March 1998
Today a new stacked wideband DDS service was ordered from Clear. KC already has three SWDDS circuits from Telecom and these connect just over fourty DDS circuits to customer sites. Over the last three months there have been several enquiries from Clear customers who would like to user Clear DDS services to conneect to KC.
Of the ninety 64K channels (timeslots) in the three Telecom SWDDS, sixty-seven are allocated to customer DDS circuits and other KCCS circuits to Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier and Blenheim.
Of the thirty channels in the Clear SWDDS, six are already allocated, four to an existing ISP connection and one each to two new KC customers.
Installation is expected by early to mid April.
Telstra have indicated that they will soon be in a position to offer Primary Rate ISDN services. When this is available KC willmove at least one of the existing four PRI to Telstra.

12 March 1998
Chadwick Healthcare, Tauranga, connect to Bopis via ISDN today.

At the same time as Mlb PlaNet is moving premises, Telecom have installed a PRI to replace the nine dial up phone lines. This will initially provide twelve ISDN channels that will answer either digital ISDN calls or analogue calls using K56flex modems (Microcom K56 MNP10).

After one year of a 'temporary' internet connection to KCCS, the Masterton PlaNet ISP has now connected to Xtra/Netway in Wellington for internet services. Starting with a 64K dds connection to Napier, they then moved to a frame relay connection to KC is Auckland.

11 January 1998
Yesterday the final changeover of KC from a Sun Sparc 4-110 system to an Axil UltraSparc 200Mhz system took place.
The kcbbs system is now running on the UltraSparc. Apart from the hardware change the operating system changed from SunOS 4.1.4 (Solaris 1) to Solaris 2.5.1. This change required most of the system programs to be recompiled for Solaris 2, the latest available versions of major programs such as sendmail, uucp (Taylor), bind, elm, pine, tin, nn, gcc, plus editors and shells.
Many other support programs were also updated and additional utilities to improve general security, anti-spamming measures and accounting procedures.

8 January 1998

17 December 1997
A 64K DDS was installed today from wn.planet to KC in Auckland. wn.planet were connected to Napier and have moved temporarily with a direct DDS to Auckland until KC's new Megalink service to Wellington is installed early next year.

Telecom install the first of two new Primary Rate ISDN at KCCS. This PRI will provide thirty more Centrex ISDN channels for business connections to the KC network.
The first of five new Centrex ISDN will connect to this new PRI in early January.

16 December 1997

4 December 1997
A new isdn connection to KCCS today, from Market Pulse Ltd, using a Cisco 1003 router to connect to one of KC's Pri ISDN.
Lan1 moved today to use Ihug for ISDN services.

28 November 1997

13 November 1997

KC in conjunction with Auckland PlaNet has acquired Marlborough PlaNet, an internet service provider in Blenheim. This ISP has recently come up for sale as its owner and founder, Les Gibbs, moved to Greymouth several weeks ago.
This is an establised ISP with a 64K DDS connection directly to KC in Auckland.
Immediate plans are to extend the number of dial in lines and upgrade the existing computer equipment and Cisco router.

Two exiting MDDS connections upgrade from 48K MDDS to 64/128K MDSS Installed and commissioned today were an upgrade to Kiwiplan's exiting 48K MDDS to a new 128K MDDS connected to KC's stacked wideband servive, and for Stevenson's an upgrade from 48K MDDS to 64K MDDS, again connected into KC's stacked wideband service.
A Centrex BRI installed last week to ESP was commissioned today. This uses a Cisco 765 router to connect to KC's PRI Centrex ISDN.

17 October 1997
Computer and Network Solutions Ltd connected via ISDN today using a Cisco 1003 router supplied by KC. The decision to use a 1003 was made after near two months of trying to get a Zyxel ISDN router to work dialback to KC's PRI.

16 October 1997
Two new 64K MDDS connections to KC are commissioned today.
A 64K MDDS to Advanced Management Systems, Takapuna, installed by Telecom earlier this week, was commissioned today. This uses a Cisco 2503 router supplied by KC.
The second 64K MDDS connects to Nutricia Ltd, Mt Wellington, and uses a Cisco 1601 router.
Both of these links each connect to a 64K timeslot in KC's second stacked Wideband DDS.

10 October 1997
KC's Cisco 5200 modem server was upgraded to K56Flex modems this morning. Initial tests showed no major problems and normal connections for PPP and other logins via this modem server.

8 October 1997
A Centrex ISDN connection to Alpha Publishing was commissioned today and this connects into one of KC's Centrex PRIs.
A 64K DDS link to Orewa, for NZ Product Link (aka North Shore PlaNet), was commissioned tonight, this uses a channel in KC's second stacked wideband DDS. This is NS PlaNet's second DDS to KC, the first being a 128k MDDS to their main site in Devenport.

6 October 1997
A Centrex ISDN connection was installed at Expert Solutions Providers Ltd (ESP) today although it will not be setup for connection to KC until early next week.

Telstra have now reported that the international link to Australia is now fully repaired and all congestion over the circuits is now gone.
The fault was due to the main tasman link being damaged some 15Km off the coast of Sydney after being caught by a trawler. It has taken five days for a kink in the cable to be repaired.

3 October 1997
International services via Telstra have been slower than usual over the last few days while more permanent repairs are made to data links in Australia. Link congestion was evident for several hours yesterday and today and Telstra expect repairs to be completed today and normal bandwidth become available again.

1 October 1997
A failure in the data link from Telstra Auckland to Telstra Sydney about 8am this morning has resulted in variable international internet access today. Several periods this morning had no connectivity past Telstra Auckland then from 10:45 am to 2:30pm the link was operational again, although performance was low. A further half hour outage to 3pm then back to normal service again after that.
Telstra explained the outage as due to a fault in a digital bearer some 90km outside Sydney.

26 September 1997
The testing of the Cisco 5300 modem server finished today. The modems proved only about 80% successful in connecting calls so testing was stopped today and a Cisco 5200 reconnected to the PRI. The 5200's Microcom modems have an over 98% success rate at connecting incoming modem calls.
The Microcom K56flex modem cards are now expected to be available on 6 October and the 5200 should be upgraded shortly after that.

24 September 1997
Another new 64K MDDS connection was ordered today, to Advanced Management Systems in Takapuna. A new ISDN connection to Parex Industries and another to a school were ordered today.

19 September 1997
New connections to KC, two new 64K MDDS connections to KC in Auckland confirmed today, a second link for North Shore PlaNet who are opening a POP in Oraki and Nutricia Ltd, a food manufacturer at Mt Wellington.
These will bothe be connected to timeslots in KC's second stacked wideband DDS.

A Centrex ISDN was installed today to OMP Ltd and three more Centrex ISDN connections are in the installation process. OMP took delivery of a Cisco 1003 ISDN router today so that the Centrex ISDN link could be commissioned over the coming weekend.

Kaon Technolgies completed their move of several DDS connections to their new offices in Newmarket (from Victoria St in the city centre), their 128K MDDS is now disconnected and KC's Primary Rate ISDN at Newmarket will be providing a network connection for Kaon with up to 256k bandwidth.

Today a new Cisco as5300 modem server was obtained from Cisco Auckland for testing. Over this weekend the PRI connected to the as5200 server will be moved to the as5300.
This new server will be used until the K56Flex modem cards arrive for the as5200 server, these are expected within the next two weeks. When the as5300 becomes available one will be obtained to manage the two stacked wideband DDS and the two PRI ISDN at KC.

14 September 1997
Most of KC's main services were moved today from the kcbbs.gen.nz Sun Sparc 4 system to the new Axil Ultra 200E. The Axil now has a 2gig and a 4gig barracuda wide scsi disk drives that will provide additional space for KC's expanding ftp files and web pages. The Axil should take over completely from the Sun SS4 before the end of September.
The SS4 will be moving to bopis.

11 September 1997
Netbyte reconnect to KC today.
Netbyte, who moved from KC in February this year to Iprolink, have now reconnected to KC after problems with their ISDN connection to Iprolink could not be resolved.

8 September 1997
Two new Centrex ISDN connections to KC today.

The PRI will be used to provide a 256K to 384K internet connection to KAON and other companies in the Newmarket area.

24 July 1997
A 64K MDDS was installed to Transdata at Auckland Airport to replace an existing 9k6 MDDS. This DDS connects to KC's new stacked wideband DDS.

15 July 1997
Bopis today upgraded its DDS connection to 128K, this DDS connects to KC's stacked wideband dds at Waikato University.

11 July 1997
A new isdn connection to KCCS in Auckland from Creative Resource & Management was commissioned today. This uses an NT sewrver and ISDn modem to provide services to a MAC network.

Two new Centrex ISDN connections were ordered from Telecom today. These will connect to Two companies in the Central Business District of Auckland and are expected to be commissioned before the the end of July.
One new 64K MDDS connection to South Auckland was also ordered today.

7 July 1997
North Shore PlaNet took delivery today of a new Cisco AS5200 modem server. This will be connecting to a new PRI and will replace the existing analogue lines at ns.planet. A new 128K MDDS link to KC will replace their existing 48K MDDS link and this will also connect to the AS5200, replacing a Spider ATTO router currently in use with the 48K MDDS.

30 June 1997
A third Primary Rate ISDN was ordered today for instalation at KCCS. This will provide 30 more dial up lines into KC's Cisco AS5200 modem server. This server will be upgraded to have 60 Microcom MNP10 33k6 modems (currently 48) and in September/October these modem cards will be replaced with 56K modems.

26 June 1997
A major failure at Telcom's Mayoral Drive exchange in Auckland occured early this afternoon. For near two hours all ISDN services and many telephone circuits were dead. Three PRI to KC were offline and all dial-up connections to KC used the remaining twelve analogue phone line (that have Titirangi numbers).
Permanent ISDN links via KC's Centrex ISDN were also offline. Calls to the Telecom faults line resulted in a standard voice statement that the problem was being attended to but no time could be given when services would be restored.
Stacked wideband and Megalink 2meg services to KC were not affected nor were any of the DDS and MDDS connections.

23 June 1997
A fast ethernet controller and 16 port async controller were ordered today for KC's Cisco 3640 router. This fast ethernet interface will now bring all of the routers and computers on KC's LAN to 100baseT fast ethernet interfaces except for one PC used for a radio LAN connection and the Cisco as5200 modem server.
The next upgrade in KC's computers will be the replacing of the Sun Sparc4 with a new Axil Ultra 1/250 or 2/200 computer.

20 June 1997
A second stacked wideband DDS for KCCS was installed today, initally two 128K DDS connections use four of the available thirty 64K timeslots. One of these 128K DDS is a upgrade in link capacity for North Shore PlaNet (aka nzplink.co.nz) who have connected to KC via a 48K MDDS for the last year.
Three more 64K MDDS on order will now proceeed to connect to this new swdds. KC's first swdds has four channels (from thirty) available although all are intended for bandwidth increases for existing DDS connections.
This new swdds will connect to the recently installed Cisco 3640 router.

17 June 1997
A 64K MDDS was installed today to MEC Distributors, Newmarket.

12 June 1997
A new Cisco Catalyst 5000 fast ethernet switch was ordered today for the KC network. This is to replace the existing Cisco 2800 switch and provides switched fast ethernet management connecting the various routers and computer at KC. This new switch should arrive just after three new fast ethernet controllers, one each for a Cisco 3640 and Cisco 4500M routers and one for KC's Sun UltraSparc 1-140 system.

6 June 1997
A new 64K DDS link was installed today to the new ISP PlaNet Warkworth.
Initially set up with four dial in lines this ISP is expecting to be in full operation by early next week.
PW's DDS connects into the KC stacked wideband DDS.

5 June 1997
KC took delivery today of another Cisco 3620 router with dual ethernet and channelised E1 interfaces. This will be used at Napier and is awaiting final approval from Telecom of dual billing on stacked wideband DDS so that an SWDDS can be installed. The 3620 will control the SWDDS which will replace four DDS NTU's currently separately connected to a Cisco 4000M router.

3 June 1997
Enquiries to Telstra New Zealand, concerning additional international bandwidth for KC, have proved disappointing. Quite unexpected, the prices quoted were actually higher than the rate KC currently pays Telstra for bandwidth and the reason given for this is that Telstra do not see any price reduction in provisioning international bandwidth and in fact fully expect the cost to increase in the next year as the limited available international circuits to USA become saturated.
Telstra are quick to point out that their competition in NZ will fare no better as they have not committed to purchase or reserved any of the few remaining available circuits.
When queried about the lower bandwidth pricing now being offered by Netway this is not seen as a concern as Telstra are convinced their service is more reliable and better supported. The competition pricing is seen as 'purchasing' customers and not sustainable in the future. The reasons for possible price increases were stated to be that Telstra in Australia will require a greater return (profit) on their New Zealand internet bandwidth. Apparently we are already paying less than comparable Australian Internet Service Providers.

2 June 1997
This week KC, Auckland PlaNet, North Shore PlaNet and Bay of Plenty internet systems (bopis) have ordered Cisco as5200 digital modem servers.
The as5200 uses primary rate ISDN to provide both ISDN and dial up analogue modem connections, effectively replacing the terminal servers and modems normally used by an ISP to provide customer dial in services.
KC has already used an as5200 on a PRI ISDN since January this year and after three months of trouble free performance just about all of KC's analogue phone lines are now redundant (and in the process of being disconnected!).
Both ak.planet and ns.planet have recently seen growth in user numbers so that additional phone lines would be needed in the near future, ns.planet had just added three new lines to provide 18 and ak.planet needed to add more to the existing 22. Bopis.co.nz (The KC/Ak.planet joint owned ISP) has also recently added four additional lines/modems and there is a pressing need for more lines as user numbers steadily grow.
These ISPs decided to move to Primary Rate ISDN and Cisco digital modem servers as this configuration will provide both 33k6 analogue modem support as well as ISDN capability on the thirty channels of a PRI.
Each will initially be connected to a single PRI and will have two 12 port modem cards, the modems being Microcom MNP10 33k6 Select type which are remotely manageable. Cisco is including a free upgrade to new Microcom 56k modem cards when these are available in August/September this year. These 56k modems use the Rockwell chipset.
In total four new Cisco as5200 servers have been ordered now, one more for KC, and one each for ak.planet, nz.planet and bopis.co.nz, two more will be ordered in late July/early August 1997.
Additional modem cards and an extra 5200 chassis will be ordered in early July as backup maintenance parts.
Two other ISPs indirectly connecting to KCCS have also expressed interest in the Cisco modem server.
The pricing of the as5200 in bundled configuration and the free upgrade to 56k modems, as well as the excellent track record of the as5200 at KCCS were other factors in deciding to purchase the as5200 modem server.

MDDS, ISDN connections to KCCS in June (24 June 1997)
Second Stacked Wideband at KCCS, Auckland (20 June 1997)
Stacked Wideband for KCCS at Waikato University (27 May 1997)

26 May 1997
The Net Registry moved their 64K dds link from Xtra to KC this morning.
Ethos Software connected via ISDN to KC today.

23 May 1997
A new Stacked Wideband DDS was installed today at Waikato University for KC. Several circuits from the KC SWDDS link in Auckland are planned to move to this new SWDDS on Tuesday 27 May when a new Cisco 3620 router is being installed.
Further enquiries for ISDN and DDS links to KC continue to arrive, thirteen this past week. Confirmed plans for new connections include an analogue A1 link using 33k6 modems, a 19K2 MDDS (a new service recently introduced by Telecom), two 64K MDDS, a 64K DDS, a 128K DDS and three Centrex ISDN connections. (128K MDDS to North Shore PlaNet,64K MDDS to Net Reigistry,64K MDDS to MEC, 64K DDS to Warkworth PlaNet.)
With Telecom standard provisioning times all of these circuits should be connected before the end of June with some expected before the end of May.
A third WaveLan radio connection to Waikato University and connecting to KC's router was confirmed today. There is also the possibility of a fourth WaveLan connection being connected in June.

22 May 1997
A 64K MDDS to connect MEC Distributors to KC was ordered today from Telecom.

20 May 1997
PlaNet Masterton (WINZ) connects directly to KC via frame relay, initially a 64K link with 64K CIR.
A second stacked wideband DDS circuit is partially installed at KC today, full installation should be completed by first week of June. It is expected that Telecom will have sorted out dual billing procedures for the SWDDS.
Six (out of sixteen) 48K DDS connected to KC have agreed to upgrade their links to 64K when dual billing is available. With other committments for channels on this SWDDS there are already sixteen of the thirty 64k channels (timeslots) allocated.
With KC also taking over the Megalink connection to Telstra and converting the KC end of the circuit to stacked wideband this will make fouteen more 64K channels available (sixteen are used for the Telstra connection).

18 May 1997
North Shore PlaNet orders upgrade from 48K DDS to 128K dds into KC this week. This is the sixth ISP to now upgrade their internet connection to KC to 128K or above.
KC's total international bandwidth now exceeds 1Mbit shared over several international bandwidth providers. An additional 256K to Telstra has now been confirmed to be implemented on 1 June and a further 128K upgrade to a direct USA connection will take the international bandwidth to 1.5Mbits by mid July.

15 May 1997
Igrin upgrade their DDS link to KC to 256K. This upgrade is part of a change to stacked wideband DDS at Igrin who also have several 64K DDS in Northland connecting to various Igrin PoPs (Points of Presence) in other free-dial zones.
EBC install a Centrex ISDN connection to KC for Internet services.

14 May 1997
An analogue leased line was connected today to Aoraki. This uses CTL modems for a permanent 33k6 connection.

12 May 1997
ECONZ make ISDN connection to KC for internet services.
Web World's DDS link was today upgraded from 64K to 128K.

6 May 1997
After variable performance with Netway's international circuit over this last weekend (a router failed at Global One) KC has had over twenty enquiries for internet connections via DDS and ISDN.
A new Cisco 3640 router with dual channelised E1 controller was delivered today. This will be managing two stacked wideband DDS connections to KCCS. A Cisco 3620 router has been ordered for the KCCS stacked wideband DDS due to be installed at Wiakato University on the 27th of May.

4 May 1997
New business connections to KCCS
An ISDN connection to Kohia Terrace School, installed last Friday.
Two new DDS connections ordered for NetRegistry (moving from xtra) and a new MDDS connection to MEC Ltd.

28 April 1997
Telecom have now started to change KC's Wideband DDS links to Hamilton and Napier to Stacked Wideband services.
The upgrade at Waikato is expected to be completed in early May. Four new DDS connections plus three existing ones connecting to KC in Auckland will use the SWDDS at Waikato, of the thirty 64K channels available there will sixteen of them immediately used and a further four allocated to the new dds connections.
KC's router at Waikato will be upgraded to a Cisco 4500 to manage the new stacked wideband DDS.

17 April 1997

A new Cisco 4500M router was installed today at KC, with two channelised E1 and 100Mbit ethernet controllers. This router is an addition to KC's routing hardware and will initially be used for recently added international data links. One of the E1 controllers will connect the new stacked wideband DDS recently ordered from Telecom. This is the second Cisco 4500 router at KC.
A 2meg E1 (g703) controller for KC's Shiva MEZZA router has been installed to connect a megalink circuit from an international bandwidth provider. This link/controller will be tested for several days before it is fuly commissioned and starts carrying some of KC's international traffic.

16 April 1997
ISP NzNet today upgraded their link to KC from a 128K DDS to a 192K Wideband DDS. The Wideband DDS will allow NzNet to increase bandwidth in 64Kbit steps as required.

15 April 1997
This week KC has now completed upgrades to its international link capacity to provide just in excess of 1.5Mbit of international connectivity. This capacity is provided by more than one Telco. The main link is still with Telstra although recent reviews of this connection to MCI in USA have shown that additional capacity should involve different international providers. The lowest capacity link (256K) will now be brought online to deal with two customers who move substantial digitised video material between New Zealand, Australia and Singapore.
New negociations with Telstra will commence this month concerning KC's short term need for more bandwidth and how Telstra can provision this. Several technical issues need to be resolved, the most important being the question of data compression over the local link from KC to Telstra Auckland AND the need to use a link sold for international connectivity (and priced as such) for moving local New Zealand traffic.
In addition to this international capacity there is a 512Kbit link to the NZIX at Wiakato University which is used for New Zealand local traffic and a partial usenet news feed from th Netlink news server at the university.

13 April 1997
Several new DDS connections and existing DDS increasing their bandwidth has almost filled KC's exiting stacked wideband DDS (thirty by 64K channels). Another stacked wideband DDS has now been ordered from Telecom as the potential for new business could require ten 64K channels within a month and another six within 2 months.
This will be the first stage in expanding KC's services. The planned expansion includes another Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) which will connect to KC's Cisco 5200 modem server. There is currently one PRI using this server that provides thirty dial in modem/isdn connections, and ten phone line/modems that use a Linux based terminal server, the dial in modem resources are almost fully used.
A further PRI provides Centrex ISDN dialin connections and the thirty lines in this are almost fully allocated.
The new PRI will connect to the 5200 and its channels will be available for both Centrex ISDN, no Centrex ISDN and 33k6 (later 56k) modem connections.

10 April 1997
Today KC has ordered four upgraded modem cards (each supports 12 modems) for its Cisco 5200 modem server. These cards are part of an upgrade scheme announced by Cisco where exiting Microcom 33K6 modem cards can be traded for Microcom 56K modem cards.
The upgrade is expected to be completed during June/July.

4 April 1997
In an absolutely stunning turnaround (for KC!) Telecom have now decided that Stacked Wideband DDS services will be available in the next 2 to 3 months with dual customer billing. This was a service promised to KC in November 1995 and which Telecom decided not to proceed with in April 1996 after half installing Stacked wideband services with KC. Since December 1995 KC has had an E1 wideband DDS set up for stacked services in Auckland and various business and ISP customers managed to get connected to it with dual billing, before Telecom's insistence on single point billing for all new connections to the stacked service.
KC has always had the infrastructue in place to support multiple stacked wideband at various major centres in New Zealand. Until recently there was Cisco routers at Hamilton and Wellington that could support stacked services. This expensive Cisco equipment, mostly 4500 routers, has been kept up to date with latest Cisco software and hardware changes and with some minimum reassigning of dds and PRI at KC this equipment will be available for use with stacked wideband.
When confirmation of the stacked DDS service is made by Telecom KC will move to install stacked services at Hamilton, Napier, Tauranga and probably Wellington and at some time in the future in Christchurch.

Internet Hawkes Bay radio connection. (12 March 1997)
Resource upgrades at Napier and Napier isp connects. (3 March 1997)
The Zones, Tauranga connects via Centrex ISDN (24 February 1997)
Bethlehem College, Tauranga connects via DDS (30 January 1997)
Tacit Group connects via MDDS (12 January 1997) 21 March 1997
Software developer Task Technology connected to KC today via ISDN.
KC will take over the BRI installed at Task so that the link can become part of KC's Centrex basic business group.

16 March 1997
After ISOCNZ sent email to pre-1996 domain name holders which contained a paragraph threatening that domains would be removed from the nz dns in mid-April if ISOCNZ's records for thiose domains were not updated, there has been a flood of email from panicked domain name holders to KC. It has been almost a non-stop exercise over this last weekend dealing with this issue as KC's name servers now have to be authorative dns for up to 100 new domains that were previously managed by Wiakato University's dns.

13 March 1997
Farmcove School connected to KC today via ISDN using a new ISDN product - Instant Internet - distributed in NZ by Bluechip Technology, Wellington.
Task Technology, an Auckland software developer, are now setting up an ISDN connection to KC using a Cisco 2503 router supplied by KC.

12 March 1997
Internet Hawkes Bay (INHB), today completed installation of a WaveLan radio connection to KC's hub site at Napier. This is the sixth ISP to connect to this hub and the first to use a radio connection. There are two more possible connections at Napier, one from a Hastings company and other from a local council.

6 March 1997
Since changing to Telstra for international connectivity (early Feb 1997) the overall throughput of international traffic has increased by some 25%. Several ISPs and other sites with connections to KC are now looking at higher capacity data connections to KCCS.
ISPs with 128K DDS circuits, NZNET and IGRIN are now both in the process of connecting via wideband DDS circuits at 192K to 256K bandwidth.
ISP Web World is moving from a 64K dds with ISDN backup to a 128K while investigating the feasability of a WaveLan type radio connection.
Terabtyte Interactive have increased their DDS link from 64K to 128K with the new 128K circuit being commissioned last week.
ISP North Shore PlaNet is in the process of upgrading from a 48K MDDS to a 64K MDDS.
Also with the probable addition of more ISPs at Napier the WDDS link from there to KCCS will be increased to 256K.

3 March 1997
Network and equipment changes at Napier.
Over this weekend a substantial upgrade in services and hardware is taking place at KC's site in Napier. A new mid range Cisco router, a new server with 5.6gigs of disk space and a radio lan connection are being installed.

1 March 1997
Netbyte, an Auckland ISP, disconnected from KCCS at midnight 28 February.
In a move planned for the last 4 months, Netbyte, an Auckland ISP, has during January and February moved its DDS and dial up ISDN customers to Iprolink. The company is now to concentrate on Web development and will connect to Iprolink via a dial up ISDN.

23 February 1997
KC's news server finally completed the last software upgrade to provide a RAID disk system. With four wide scsi Seagate Barracuda 4 gig disk drives installed last week and Solstice Disk Suite 4.1 installed over this weekend, the news server (news.kcbbs.gen.nz) now has 10gigs of disk space for usenet news storage. With Disk Suite implementing Raid level 5 the new server's disk access is now significantly improved.

21 February 1997
In a reorganisation of KC's routers at Waikato University the Cisco 4500M router was replaced today by a Cisco 2514 router. Since most of the DDS connections into the 4500 have now moved to the Cisco 2522 router at Napier, most of the serial ports on the 4500 had become redundant.
The only connections left at the KC router in Waikato is the 512K Wideband DDS connection to KCCS in Auckland plus an ethernet link to the radio lan network that connects hn.planet.gen.nz and thenet.co.nz in Hamilton.
The 4500M will now be used in Auckland to replace a Cisco 4000M that connects to Telstra. Eventually a second megalink to the 4500M will connect to ICONZ in central Auckland.

18 February 1997
The last major upgrade to the routers and computers at KCCS was completed today. Late last year it was decided to carry out a progressive major investment in upgrading the core computers and routers at KCCS over a two month period December 1996 to early February 1997.
Although the then existing equipment was more than capable of managing the existing business, the decision was made to upgrade in light of the continued expansion of KC's business. With twelve new DDS connections in the last quarter of 1996 and ten in the previous quarter the new connection trend is continuing into 1997 with four new connection in the first six weeks of 1997.

The scope of this upgrade has included:
A new UltraSparc 200E computer system replacing a Sun Sparc20/71 system as KC's news server,
Replacing twelve of KC's dial in phone lines, modems, and Cisco 2511 router with a new Cisco AS5200 modem server and Primary Rate ISDN circuit. (providing thirty new dial in 33k6/ISDN digital lines),
A new nine port X21 controller for KC's MEZZA router,
A new Megalink connection to Telstra using a Cisco 4500 with channelised cE1 controller,
A new Wideband DDS link to Napier to a new Cisco 2522 multiport router connecting to six ISPs in the middle/lower North Island.
A new Centrex ISDN link to ICONZ and a new newsfeed from MCI.

The next phase of hardware upgrades to KC is planned for July/August 1997 and is expected to include the provision of a new Cisco 7507 router and additional PRI ISDN circuits to KC.

5 February 1997
After some extensive testing KC's Cisco as5200 terminal server came online today for analogue (v43) and ISDN dialin connections.
Cisco provided a dual E1 interface for this server in January so that it could replace an E1 as5200 on loan from Cisco. Before everything could be fully installed an updated version of the operating system for the router was needed to enable the E1 interface to operate with New Zealand Telecom's Primary Rate ISDN switches.
This server will provide dial up PPP connections to the KC network.
During late February and March eleven of KC's phone lines will be disconnected as the lines are effectively replaced by the thirty available with the as5200.
As soon as Telecom can provision more PRI ISDN circuits a second will be ordered for the as5200 to take it to the maximum sixty lines.

3 February 1997
Starting today most of the networks routed through KCCS will now be using KC's Megalink servive to Telstra. This link is being upgraded through February from 512K bandwidth to 768K then 1Mbit
Problems with throughput on the Netway service have continued to severly degrade overall performance in the peak times between 9pm and 11pm.
KCCS will be working with ICONZ to increase ICONZ's link to Netway to 1Mbit. KC will be using 256K of this bandwidth as a backup service and providing a Cisco RISC router at Waikato so that compression and source routing services can be implemented.

2 February 1997
KC's WDDS link to Waikato failed yesterday just after 9pm. The fault occured at the Hamilton end of the DDS. The Auckland end of the link which is part of a stacked wideband service (which continued working cleanly) was tested by Telecom for several hours up to midnight but no circuit faults could be found.
Telecom were unable to gain access to Waikato University until early this morning when an NTU was changed. This did not repair the link and up until 10pm several Telecom technicians were testing various parts of the circuit. Just before 10pm the link came alive and normal operation was resumed.
Throughout a few frantic hours from 7am to 10am this morning KC's Cisco routers were restarted and at Waikato the WDDS was moved to a different serial port on KC's Cisco 4500.
Telecom are now investigating the cause of this outage as it is still not clear where the problem occured.

26 January 1997
At a meeting with Netway attended by David Dix (KCCS), Rowan Smith (ICONZ) and Craig Anderson (IPROLINK) the situation concerning international access and data throughput was the main topic.
Netway were made aware of diminishing performance that over the last few months had worsened to the point where user internet connections were almost useless between 9pm and midnight. This was now affecting many connected ISPs who were unable to provide profitable services to their customers. Both KCCS and ICONZ who have connections to Netway are investigating pooling their connection to Netway with slightly reduced bandwidth.
Netway are investigating the overall Internet performance from their international connections and are expected to report back within 5 days.

22 January 1997
Connections to KC at Napier
The first stage of implementing a hub system at Napier with direct connection to KCCS in Auckland has now been completed.
There are now six ISPs connected to KC's Cisco 2522 multiport router at Napier and within the next few weeks two WaveLan short range radio connections are to be installed.
At present this hub connects: Ram Management in Napier, Brice Parker Associates in Gisborne, Kapiti PlaNet, Wellington PlaNet and Masterton PlaNet. Hawkes Bay Internet (HBIN) are now making arrangements to connect to this hub via radio link and REAP in Taupo may be connecting via 64K DDS to HBIN. All of these ISP systems connect directly to KCCS in Auckland via a Wideband DDS between Auckland and Napier.
The next stage in developing this hub will be the installation of a shared news server system at Napier.

21 January 1997
Tacit International connects to KC.
A dial up customer with KCCS for two years Tacit International today connected to KC via Telecom 48K MDDS.
The Zones, a MAC software distribtion company in Tauranga, also connected to KCCS today with dial up ISDN. After testing their Securicor 3net ISDN router with internet connections to Auckland, The Zones will now be connecting to KC in Tauranga.

16 January 1997
KC's Centrex ISDN link to Iconz was tested and enabled today.
KC will now be sharing usenet news with Iconz and Iprolink and eventually all news will be coming from MCI in USA. This will enable a larger number of newsgroups than are currently available from the news server at Waikato University.

12 January 1997
A new Wideband DDS connection between KCCS in Auckland and RamHB in Napier was installed and commissioned this weekend. This will will provide internet connectivity to the five ISPs connected to the KC hub, a Cisco 2522, located at RamHB in Napier.
Initially the Wideband DDS will have four channels enabled to provide 256k bandwidth. This will be increased as more Internet systems connect to the 2522.

6 January 1997
Two new DDS connection to KC today, details in business updates.

5 January 1997
Another Internet Cafe closes today.
The small internet cafe in Devenport run by ISP nzplink.co.nz (NZ Product Link NZ), Chris Miller, closed it doors today after almost six months in operation.
The cafe shared premises with a photographic processing business and although it provided only four workstations connecting to the Internet via a Centrex connection to nzplink, it had built up a regular clientele of users. On its last day of operation many of these users were disappointed that the cafe had to close.
The demise of the photographic business before Christmas meant that the cafe would have to pay the full rental for the premises. Without an immediate doubling in size, workstations and customers this was not a feasible solution.
In other internet cafe related business, one of the directors of the Comm-unity cafe (High St, Downtown Auckland), that closed last October is now preparing to open a new internet cafe in Lorne Street during February 1997.

2 January 1997
KC's new news server was brought online yesterday. The Axil Ultra 200E replaced the Sun Sparc 20 system that has been the news server since July 1995. The changeover went quite easy and minor configuration problems were sorted out over a couple of hours.
The extent of the change involved not only a hardware upgrade to an Ultra Sparc system but the operating system from SunOS 4.1.4 (aka Solaris 1.1.2) to Solaris 2.5.1, the news manager software from INN 1.4 to INN 1.5.1 and many INN support programs and general utility programs to the latest versions for Solaris 2.5.
The changeover was planned over a 3 day period of the new year holiday and the old news server was to be kept intact as an immediate backup. However, since the actual changeover time turned out to be less than one hour with a further two hours of minor fixes, the Utra has completely taken over as news server.

26 December 1996
Despite the holiday season the number of enquires for business connections to KC has been the highest ever in November and December 1996. The delay factor with nearly all new connections is the time it takes Telecom to provision a new data circuit. MDDS, DDS and ISDN are all taking well over three weeks. Currently awaiting connections are three Basic Rate ISDN, an analogue leased line, two 48K MDDS, a 64K DDS and a Wide band DDS, all for new sites connecting to KC.
In December two DDS connections into KC have been disconnected. The Building Advisory Group closed business in mid December, they had a 64K DDS to KC, and Powerlink ISP have moved from KC to Sinesurf on CHristmas Eve where their system is now telehoused. They had a 48K MMDS to KC at Glen Eden.
A new short range radio connection to KC is now being tested and awaiting planning permission is another radio link that will have a range of just over 25Km.

Lanscape connects to KCCS via MDDS (6 January 1997)

Powerlink ISP moves from KCCS to Sinesurf (25 December 1996)

Peace Computers connect to KCCS via Centrex ISDN (11 December 1996)

Auckland Airport Video Wall display connects to KCCS. (7 December 1996)

23 December 1996
The new Axil UltraSparc 200E computer system arrived today. This is to replace the Sparc 20 system that was KC's news server. Along with 8gigs of fast disk drive (Seagate Barracudas) the new 200Mhz Sparc has 128K or memory and a fast ethernet port.
This new system will run Solaris 2.5.1 operating system and use INN1.4 news manager software and Apache web server software.
The plan is to implement it over the period from Christmas to the New Year holiday weekend. Nearly all the software utilities required for the 200E have already been prepared, compiled and configured on the Sun Ultra1-140 system obtained several months ago. This Sun Ultra was originally intended to be KC's news server but since Sun New Zealand failed to deliver an ordered Swift Sbus controller, that would have provided a fast ethernet port and fast-wide scsi interface, the Sun Ultra does not have sufficient network or disk I/O performance to be a useful news server.

19 December 1996
A new ISP in Masterton today connected via a 64K DDS link to KC's multiport Cisco 2522 at Napier. This connection now brings a total of four ISPs connecting to the Napier hub in just under six weeks. Further confirmed connections should mean at least two more ISPs and one business connecting to this hub by the end of January 1997.
A Wideband DDS link is due to be installed between Napier and KCCS in Auckland about the 10th of January. This was originally planned by Telecom for the 20th of December but non-availabilty of installation staff pushed the expected avialability of the WDDS back to 10 January. Even this data has not been confirmed.

18 December 1996
Today two new business connectiosn to KC.
One is a Centrex idsn connection to a private network (who want to stay private!) using a Cisco 2502 router supplied by KC and the other is a 64K DDS connection using a timeslot from KC's stacked wideband DDS and also using a Cisco 2503 router supplied by KC.
Also today Telecom installed a 2meg 'Megalink' service which will replace a current dds connection to Telstra. This will enable the 512K link to Telstra to be easily bandwidth increased in 128K steps as demand grows.

17 December 1996
After extensive recabling by Telecom the on-off again Primary Rate ISDN at 3594740 has at last run for 24 hours without reporting any errors.
Since its installation in late September this PRI has never managed to stay alive for more than 48 hours. Failures were almost always on the underlying 2Meg circuit which often failed with a BER alarm indication (BER alarm means Bit Error Rate too high).
This PRI is connected to a Cisco AS5200 modem server and its constant failure would take out 30 phone lines into KCCS. During this time dialins were only available on 24 normal phone lines via CTL and Multitech modems connecting to a Cisco 2511 terminal server and a Linux based terminal server.

14 December 1996
The Pentium PC Linux system on KC's network used until now for traffic accounting has been pressed into service as a terminnal server. As part of the process of changing KC users' PPP logins to use dynamic IP addressing instead of using a static address each, the five phone lines based in 817-8424 were moved to the Linux system and IP addresses allocated to each port. Within several hours of this move there were many PPP logins to these lines which proved that for most dial up PPP accounts there is little or no bother in moving to Dynamic IP address allocation.
The Linux system connects six of KC's lines via the standard two Com ports and a 4port card.

11 December 1996
Today Howick Intermediate school connected via ISDN to KCCS and Peace Computers connected via Centrex ISDN. Both have just had new ISDN BRI installed in the last few days after waiting since ordering the BRI from Telecom in October this year. Another two ISDN BRI connections are expected before Christmas.
The Auckland Airport Video Wall project also connected via DDS today using a Cisco 2514 router supplied by KCCS until the Cisco ordered for the project arrives early next year.
Spectel who had a 64K DDS connection into KC's stacked Wideband DDS have disconnected today as the company continues to move towards closure. The last remaining computer staff in Spectel, who leave today and tomorrow, arranged an orderly shutdown of Spectel's web server and other internet services. Spectel originally connected to KCCS almost 18 months ago and were the first company connecting to KCCS to use an Emerging Technologies Synchronous Serial controller card to manage their DDS link. This is an ISA bus PC card and was used in a PC based Linux system to connect to KC's stacked wideband DDS circuit.

10 December 1996
Telecom have now taken action to prevent more ISDN connections in the central business district of Auckland connecting to ISPs Centrex group.
For some time now it has been known that Telecom wanted to prevent low cost data connections using Centrex ISDN services. Over the last number of months a number of companies in Auckland had Basic Rate ISDN installed and then joined KC's Centrex ISDN BBG (Basic Business Group). This provided an ISDN data connection with no per-minute connection charge resulting in an all up cost of about $130 per month.
In the last few days Iconz attempted to have one of their existing BRI included in KC's BBG but Telcom refused to do this. Although the excuse given was to close what Telecom see as a loophole in the existing use of Centrex ISDN for data connections, it is unsure whether the recently reported action of Iconz and KCCS taking the first step towards data sharing via a Centrex ISDN connection had any influence on Telecom's decision.

4 December 1996
ISDN connections to KC's Centrex ISDN can now see graphical reports of connection throughput.
The Technical Status menu (from What's Happening at KC? web menu) is now updated to include bargraphs showing the average data throughput for each of the ISDN customers connecting via ISDN dailup to KCCS.
This will assist ISDN customers in monitoring their link throughput and in planning for link upgrades or changes in link usage.

2 December 1996
Telecom ISDN services.
The lack of resources from NZ Telecom with provisioning further Basic Rate ISDN in Auckland for the last month has now meant that there are seven companies waiting for their ISDN BRI connections into KC's Centrex ISDN.
The delay in resourcing may be resolved for some of these companies in this next week to 10 days as Telecom have now managed to make available some 250 ISDN BRI at the Mayoral Drive exchange although these are expected to be used up fairly quickly in clearing the backlog of orders.
At least one company has decided to use a 48K MDDS link instead of waiting any longer for a BRI.

23 November 1996
DDS links start to connect to Napier hub.
In the last week two 64K DDS links, one from Kapiti planet, the other from Wellington Planet have connected to KC's Cisco2522 router in Napier. These are the first two planned DDS link to this hub based at Ram Management.
The three ISPs will be sharing a 128K dds directly to KCCS in Auckland. Another three ISPs are expected to connect by end January when the link to Auckland will be upgraded to a wideband DDS, initially 192K bandwidth then increasing as required.

20 November 1996
Three Auckland ISPs get together to form an Auckland Internet Exchange.
Today, David Dix, from KC met with Craig Anderson of Iprolink and Rowan Smith of ICONZ to discuss possible areas of cooperation and talk about establishing an Internet Exchange is Auckland in the near future.
Although more of a technical discussion all were agreed that something needs to be done to minimise the dependancy on existing Telcos who provide international bandwidth to all three ISPs. With the entry of Clear into the ISP business following Telecom's Xtra ISP entry several months ago it is now very obvious that the Telcos desire to take over the ISP business in New Zealand. These ISPs see no long term future in being involved with suppliers who are competing in the same business and with what appears to be more favourable business terms (Telecom has stated it does not expect Xtra to make a profit until 1998 compared to those offered to other ISPs).

Almost immediately data connections are being made between the three ISPs, initially with ISDN and DDS services but changing as soon as possible to radio LAN connections. Each will be importing into New Zealand a major chunk of available Usenet news and distributing newsgroups to each other. News will no longer be taken from Wiakato University where the news distribution is managed by the NZNews group based at Victoria University in Wellington.

Over the next month or so the costs and installation of a direct E1 2meg link to USA will be investigated with a view to provisioning this circuit as quickly as possible.
With KCCS connecting twentytwo other ISPs throughout New Zealand to the Internet as well as over thirty companies, and both Iprolink and ICONZ directly connecting many other ISPs and companies the traffic through an Auckland Exchange would be quite substantial.
(see press releases)

15 November 1996
From just after 11am yesterday morning KC's Centrex PRI ISDN circuit died. Although it appeared to come alive on several occasions about midday the full service was not restored until late afternoon.
Also affected at the same time were three 48K MDDS links into KC which were down for a similar period, all coming alive again at the same time as the PRI.

Several fault reports were made to Telecom and as recently as this morning at 10am various Telecom people have been phoning to check on the PRI status. Reasons for the failure have been given as:
1.A Cable was cut by Enerco when laying a gas main.
2 There was a switch fault and/or a cross-tie error at Titirangi exchange.
3.The Mayoral drive exchange PRI switch appeared to be working correctly but no data was moving.
4. An error was made while trying to repair an unrelated PRI circuit to another customer.

From various reports (other ISPs) and the press it definitely appears that Telecom were having some major problems yesterday. It is so far not known if these are in any way related to the PRI and DDS problems with KC.
Two other PRI and over twenty other DDS circuits connecting into KC were not affected.

12 November 1996
Franklin "ISP The Packing Shed" connects to KCCS today.
Details in Business Updates

11 November 1996
At a meeting in Napier on Sunday of eight ISPs from the central/lower North Island it was agreed to set up a wideband 2Meg DDS link from Napier to KCCS in Auckland so that an Internet hub could be created at ISP RamHB in Napier.
This would provide substantial cost savings in DDS charges for several existing ISPs who connect directly to Waikato University either by "B" or "C" step Telecom DDS. Napier is priced by Telecom as an "A" step DDS distance for all these ISPs. The A step pricing from Napier covers an area that includes Gisborne, Taupo, Palmerston North, Kapiti, Masterton and Wellington. Several new ISPs as well as exiting ISPs are keen to become involved in this new hub and by early next year there should be at least six ISPs using this service as their main connection to the Internet.
See detailed report in Business Update.

5 November 1996
Online Business Management, Auckland, connect to KCCS via Centrex ISDN dial up today. Within several hours of receiving their Cisco 1003 router today, OBM has changed their Internet connection from ICONZ to KCCS. OBM is the latest of over 20 Auckland companies in the Central Business District to use KCCS's Centrex ISDN connection services.

4 November 1996
KC's second PRI ISDN moves to Centrex capability today providing a total of sixty Centrex capable ISDN channels.
Up until today there are now twenty Centrex ISDN connections to KC and sixteen non-Centrex dial up ISDN connections.
Enquiries about new connections to KC's ISDN Internet service are still arriving almost daily.

2 November 1996
With the recent announcement of a new DDS link between KCCS in Auckland and Ram Management in Napier there have now been four new enquiries from existing and new ISPs who could connect to the NZ Internet via Napier for the cost of a Telecom 'A' step DDS.
The potential for link cost savings are attracting these new enquiries as currently it is a 'C' step data link charge from anywhere south of Napier to connect to Hamilton or Auckland where the main International Internet Service delivery is located.
By concentrating as many ISPs via 'A' step DDS to Napier and then sharing the cost of the link to Auckland this will allow more participants to share KC's international bandwidth hence reducing the cost for everyone.
KC's present International link requirements are 1Mbit shared over two links of 512Kbits, one from Netway and one from Telstra.

31 October 1996
Cisco replaced KC's AS5200 modem server today with a model that has two E1 PRI interfaces. The RAD E1/T1 switch which failed last Wednesday took the 5200 out of service for just two days as the previous 5200 was supplied with a dual T1 PRI interface and needed the RAD to interface to KC's E1 PRI circuits.
A third PRI circuit was ordered today from Telecom but it is doubtful that they will be able to provision it before Christmas, if at all.
The current plans for user connection services into KC are the provision of two PRI ISDN circuits into the Cisco AS5200 giving a total of sixty ISDN channels that will also answer v34+ analogue modems.
A further 30 ISDN only channels are currently managed by KC's Cisco 4500 router. These channels are the basis of KC's Centrex Basis Business Group and currently have 24 connections from comapnies in the Auckland CBD.
Including KC's existing 24 PSTN phone lines with v34+ modems there are a total of 114 dial up lines into the KC network in Auckland.

31 October 1996
An extension of KC's existing contract with Netway Communications was agreed today for six months with effect from the 1 August 1996. This is to provide a 512Kbit connection into the Netway International Internet link with service delivery in Auckland.
KC has also agreed with Telstra to provide a 512Kbit Internet connection with installation in December 1996 and also with service delivery in Auckland.
Negociations are currently underway for another 256Kbit international connection for KC. This will be a direct link to USA and will not use the services of any of the current International bandwidth providers in New Zealand.

27 October 1996
KC's Cisco 4500 had a new fast ethernet controller added today. This replaced a dual port ethernet controller.

25 October 1996
Major changes are planned to the part of the KC network that connects Auckland to Waikato University and further south.
In line with KC's upgrade to international links with service delivery in Auckland the compressed wideband 512K dds to Waikato will no longer be required.
This WDDS will be reduced to either 64K or 128K total bandwidth to provide a connection to the NZ Internet and also provide connectivity to systems in Hamilton and Gisborne connecting to KC's router at Waikato.
Other systems from Wellington and Napier also connected to this router and other associated ISPs from Kapiti, Blenheim, Masterton and possibly Christchurch will now all be running DDS connections directly to Napier. This move allows nearly all of these ISPs to use a lower cost 'A' step dds compared to a 'B' or 'C' step to connect to Waikato.
A new 128K compressed DDS will link Napier directly to KCCS in Auckland.

25 October 1996
A new 48K MDDS circuit was installed today between KCCS in Glen Eden and Showoff in Newmarket Auckland. This link will be replacing a dial UP ISDN connection which was becoming too expensive due to the incresing time showoff was connected to KC.

18 October 1996
It has taken the last two weeks to get KC's new Primary Rate ISDN installation completed. Today, Telecom completed the physical installation and connection of the new 2meg circuit CLTE equipment. The circuit has been tested for over 24 hours and is clean. Initially this PRI is connected into a Cisco 4000M router with cE1 controller set up by software to manage the PRI. By mid next week this will be replaced with the Cisco AS5200 and then become available as a v34/ISDN set of 30 dial in lines to KC.
This PRI will not initially be Centrex connected.
The next PRI is scheduled to be installed in late December/early January although it now appears that Telecom may have difficulty in providing additional PRI circuits in Auckland. (Something about Xtra having reserved them all)

14 October 1996
The KCCS local ethernet network is now moving toward complete conversion to 100BaseT. The key devices on the network will all be 100BaseT by the end of this week. Within the last three days the arrival of a 100BaseT interface for KC's Cisco 4500M, two Sbus fast ethernet controllers for KC's Sun S20/71 news server and for the Sun Ultra 1-140, and the replacing of a 486dx100 PC runing Linux with a Pentium 133 system with SMC 100BaseT ethernet interface will complete the ethernet upgrade for the systems that were loading the existing 10BaseT ethernet network.
The Cisco 2800 switch was delivered with a single switch 100BaseT port interface card but this was augmented several weeks ago with the addition of an eight port 100BaseT switched hub interface card.
The new Pentium 133 PC system will take over several network management and accounting tasks from the DX100, and with an increase in disk size to 1.6Gbytes (from 450megs) it will also become an online news reading systems supporting nntp access from terminal servers and access servers on the KC network.
