Internet Hawkes Bay

12 March 1997

Today Internet Hawkes Bay completed the installation and testing of their WaveLan radio connection to the KCCS hub at Napier. This is the first of several radio internet connections expected to be installed in Napier over the next few months.
Using PCrouter software with an internal WaveLan controller in a low end PC at the KCCS end of the link and a WaveLan 'RangeLan' external controller at the INHB end, the data link tested at an aveage 600Kbit/sec throughput when initially connected.
With some finer aligning of the antennae and rerouting of cables the link should mover closer to the maximum 1Mbit/sec throughput.
This radio link replace a Telecom 64K DDS circuit that connected INHB to REAP (Rural Education Activities Program) in Taupo. INHP and REAP shared a 64K DDS link to Waikato University and shared the cost of a fixed price internet connection to Netway. REAP have decided not to move and will stay with a Netway service from Waikato.
