Second Wideband DDS for KC

20 June 1997

Today a second stacked wideband DDS was installed at KC in Auckland.
With the first SWDDS now almost fully utilised, with twenty-seven of the available thirty timeslots already allocated, this new SWDDS will immediately provide much needed expansion capability for new DDS connections to KCCS.

Although some direct DDS connections to KC in Auckland were transferred to an SWDDS installed for KC at Waikato university last month, and this made available six timeslots, three of these were allocated to new DDS within a few days leaving insufficient timeslots for several new MDDS connections already ordered for connection to KCCS.

North Shore PlaNet is one of two companies with new 128K MDDS connections to KC, each is replacing an existing 48K MDDS connection to KC, and Comtech NZ is upgrading a 64K MDDS to 128K. Two new 64K DDS, recently ordered from Telecom, are expected to be installed in early July.

The new SWDDS will connect to a Cisco 3640 router recently acquired for this purpose. This router will also connect to KC's Centrex Primary Rate ISDN (being moved from a Cisco 4500) and will include a hardware compression module for STAC compression capability over stacked wideband DDS connections.

Enquiries for DDS connections continue to arrive at about four to six a month and with the recent adjustments in Metropolitan DDS pricing the Telecom rental of a 64K MDDS connecting to KCCS is now slightly over $500 per month (compared to $960 per month). This lower pricing is possible because the KCCS end of the MDDS terminates in an SWDDS link.
