After experiencing problems with their DDS connection to ISP Midland in early July 1996, IGRIN have now moved to use KCCS as their ISP.
Problems with Midland's radio connection to Waikato University, apparently
after other radio connections were upgraded, caused extended periods where
sites connecting via Midland were unable to connect to overseas locations
or even NZ locations beyond others connecting to Midland.
Since Midland's problems were not easily or immediately fixed, this left
IGRIN with many dissatisfied users who although prepared to accept a short
period without international access, were less happy about the extended
periods of no access over a 5 week period in June and July of this year.
In early July IGRIN was taken over by Frank de Swart and shortly
thereafter arrangements were made to move their DDS link to KCCS in
Auckland where IGRIN would use a channel in KCCS's stacked Wideband DDS
connecting into a Cisco 4500 router.
IGRIN had been experiencing modem/router problems and a new Cisco 2511
was purchased (provided by KCCS) while the existing 2511 was serviced
and upgraded, memory and software.
Richard Haakma working with Bryan Rentoul of IGRIN helped to set up
an AXIL Sparc 5 system obtained by IGRIN to be their main computer
system. An existing PC based Linux system was set up as a News server
and a newsfeed obtained from KCCS.
An additional 10 phone lines were added in late July when IGRIN was
relocatred to different premises in Whangerai.
Now with a total of 25 phone lines IGRIN is the largest ISP covering the
Whangerai and Northland region of NZ.
