FIRST AID KIT IDEAS

FOR YOUR BIRDS

MANY A TIME I HAVE BEEN CAUGHT OUT RUNNING ROUND THE HOUSE IN A FRANTIC STATE TRYING TO FIND CERTAIN POSTIONS AND INSTRUMENTS TO HELP A FEATHERED FRIEND IN AN EMERGENCY. EVERYTHING FROM STRANGULATION ATTEMPTS BY A LORIKEET ON HIS PLAY ROPE, TO THE SKIN OF MY PET ALEXANDRINES FACE BEING SCRAPED COMPLETLEY BACK JUST MISSING HIS EYE, AFTER AN ATTEMPT TO GET OUT OF HIS CAGE AND GETING HIS HEAD STUCK. THESE THINGS YOU NEVER PLAN ON, SO TAKE MY ADVICE AND IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY THEN MAKE UP A FIRST AID KIT FOR YOUR BIRDS.

ACIDOPHILUS / PROBOTICS

IF YOU HAVE TO GIVE A BIRD ANTIBIOTICS FOR A FUNGAL OR BACTERIAL PROBLEM, THIS WILL KILL ALL THE BAD BACTERIA AS WELL AS THE GOOD BACTERIA. FOR A BIRD TO GET BACK ON TRACK WE HAVE TO REPLACE THE GOOD STUFF THIS IS WHAT PROBOTICS WILL DO. PROBOTICS AID IN A QUICKER RECOVERY PERIOD FOR YOUR BIRD, HELPING THE NATURAL GUT FLORA TO RE-ESTABLISH ITSELF

ALOE VERA

THIS A GOOD TO USE ON BURNS, CUTS AND TOXIC POISONING. I HAVE HEARD IT HAS ALSO AIDED YOUNG CHICKS WITH BURNT CROPS. IT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE FOOD STRAIGHT FROM THE PLANT AND HAS HELPED TO SOOTHE AND HEAL THE CROP .

ANICA

GOOD FOR STRESS, AND A GOOD TONIC TO HELP THE HEALING PROCESS AFTER INJURY.

ANTI-FUNGAL TREATMENTS

MYCOSTATIN/NILSTAT THIS IS A TOPICAL TREATMENT (MUST TOUCH THE INFECTED AREA TO WORK) THIS IS AN INTERNAL TREATMENT. IF YOU ARE TREATING A FUNGAL CROP INFECTION TRY AND ADMINISTER ON AN EMPTY CROP.
THIS CAN BE PURCHACED FROM YOUR LOCAL CHEMIST.

ANTI-COLAGULANT

TO HELPS TO STOP BLEEDING FROM PULLED TOENAILS, BITTEN FEET AND OTHER MINOR INJURIES.

AUREOMYCIN (ANTIBIOTIC POWDER)

THIS IS AN ANTIBIOTIC POWDER WHICH CAN BE USED TO STOP BLEEDING, TREAT WOUNDS, CUTS AND RELATED SKIN INFECTIONS, AND IS GREAT TO USE ON NEWLY HATCHED CHICKS TO CLEAN AND STERILIZE THE NAVEL AREA AFTER HATCHING.

BAKING SODA

BAKING SODA AND WARM WATER CAN BE USED AS A SALINE TO CLEAN AND TREAT INJURIES. IT CAN ALSO BE USED TO HELP NEUTRALIZE ACIDIC CROPS DUE TO SICKNESS EG. SOUR CROP, FUNGAL AND BACTERIAL INFECTIONS. IT IS ALSO USFUL TO USE WHEN MILKING AND FLUSHING A BIRDS CROP AFTER SOUR CROP OR CROP STATIS.

BROODER HOSPITAL CAGE

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR EQUIPMENT IF YOU KEEP BIRDS OF ANY KIND. WHEN A BIRD IS SICK THE FIRST REQUIREMENT IS HEAT OF AROUND 32 DEGREES CENTIGRADE.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE A DRY HEAT YOU MUST PROVIDE SOME HUMIDITY AS WELL, BY PLACING A SMALL CONTAINER OF WATER IN THE HOSPITAL CAGE.

CALCIUM SANDOZ

USED ON EGG BOUND HENS, KEEP IN MIND IT MAY TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO ABSORB INTO THE BIRDS SYSTEM.

COD LIVER OIL – PARAFIN OIL

SOME OILS CAN BE USED TO HELP A BIRD PASS WORMS IF THERE IS A BAD INFESTATION IT CAN BE ADDED TO THE WORMING AGENT IF BEING ADMINISTERED INTO THE CROP.

COLLOIDAL SILVER – IT HAS BEEN USED AS AN EYE WASH AND HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE IN CURING SOME EYE INFECTIONS. (HUMAN OR ANIMAL) – COLLOIDAL SIVER CAN BE USED AS A GENERAL BIRD TONIC OR AN ANTIBIOTIC /ANTISEPTIC. IT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO ASSIST AND HELP MAINTAIN A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM, OR SUPPORT A BIRDS IMMUNE SYSTEM DURING TIMES OF ILLNESS OR STRESS.
READ MORE ABOUT COLLOIDAL SILVER IN THE ARTICLES SECTION.

COTTON BUDS AND COTTON WOOL

FOR THOSE HARD TO REACH LITTLE PLACES.

EYE TREATMENTS

THIS IS USED FOR EYE INJURIES. BAKING SODA AND WARM WATER CAN ALSO BE USED IN THE INSTANCE. YOU CAN ALSO USE BAKING SODA IN WARM WATER FOR AN EYE SOOTHING TREATMENT. A MILD SALINE SOLUTION MADE FROM SALT AND WARM WATER IS GOOD FOR CLEANING AND TREATING INFECTED EYE AREAS. THIS WORKED REALLY WELL FOR ME WITH A QUAIL WHO HAD BEEN ATTACKED ON THE HEAD AND AROUND THE EYES BY AN INDIAN RINGNECK. IF IT IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM CONSULT YOUR VET.

ELECTROLYTES

TO HYDRATE SICK BIRDS. THIS CAN BE PURCHASED FROM YOUR LOCAL CHEMIST IN AN EMERGENCY. THE BEST ONE TO USE IS A PRODUCT DESIGNED FOR ANIMALS (POLYAID PLUS FOR EXAMPLE). IT IS A GOOD ALL ROUNDER AND CAN BE USED ON YOUR CAT OR DOG OR SICK PET ALSO. POLYAID ALSO CONTAINS PROBOTICS WHICH IS GOOD TO HELP THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND GENERAL GUT FLORA TO GET BACK ON TRACK. ESPECIALLY AFTER USING ANTIBIOTICS.

IODINE

USED AS AN ANTISEPTIC ON CUTS AND ABRASION

PARASITE/MITE SPRAYS

GOOD TO HAVE ON HAND AS THESE LITTLE IRRITATIONS CAN APPEAR ANYTIME IN ANY BIRD. . IVOMEC DROPS CAN BE USED TO TREAT AIR-SAC MITE IN CANARIES AND IS VERY EFFECTIVE

SCISSORS

A SHARP PAIR OF SCISSORS ON HAND IS A MUST.

SIVER NITRATE STICKS

THIS IS VERY GOOD FOR BITTEN OF TOES PULLED TOENAILS AND TOENAILS THAT HAVE BEEN TRIMMED TO FAR BACK AND A BLEEDING. THIS IS THE SAME THING MEN USE TO STOP BLEEDING WHEN THEY HAVE CUT THEMSELVES SHAVING

TEA-TREE-OIL

TEA TREE OIL IS A NATURAL ANTISEPTIC/ANTIBIOTIC/FUNGICIDE NOT FOR INTRNAL USE. KEEP IN MIND TO DILUTE THE 100% PURE TEA TREE OIL AS THIS CAN BE TOO STRONG TO USE STRAIGHT ONTO THE SKIN, GOOD FOR CUTS ABRASIONS AND MOSQUITO BITES.

WORMERS

COMBANTRIM GOOD TO USE ON YOUNG BIRDS IF YOU FIND A WORM PROBLEM. COMBANTRIM IS USED TO WORM BABIES AND CHILDREN SO IT IS MUCH MORE GENTLE ON A YOUNG BIRDS SYSTEM

PANACURE – THIS WORMER IS BEST USED BY ADMINISTERING WITH A CROP NEEDLE STRAIGHT INTO THE BIRDS CROP.

IVOMEC – THIS WORMER IS GREAT FOR THE LITTLE BIRDS UP TO THE SIZE OF A COCKATEIL, AS YOU CAN ADMINISTER THE DROPS ON THE BACK OF THE NECK. THIS WORMER IS NOT ADVICED FOR THE BIGGER PARROT SPECIES AS IT IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO BE EFFECTIVE. PLEASE NOTE WITH PIGEONS AND FOWL IT IS BEST TO ADMINISTER PANACURE INTO THE CROP AND NOT IVOMEC ON THE BACK OF THE NECK.
