Baby Rainbow Lorikeet

This is a five week old Rainbow Lorikeet (Cutie!), still fed and cared for by its parents who just tolerate it being handled and keep a close eye on what is happening when he is out of the nestbox. Early handling gets the baby familiar with people and will generally lead to a people friendly adult.

Note that the head feathers are the first to develop, the characteristic Rainbow Lory blue feathers with the lighter electric blue tics. Still lots of down feathers but some red/orange colours starting to appear on the chest and plenty of green on the stubby wings..

Eyes and beak just about all black, it will take about six months for the orange ring to appear in the eyes and for the black to receed on the beak giving way to a light orange/brown colouring although some black may be retained near the nostrils.
