IP Net services from KC

6 August 2000

Telecom's IPNet services for ISPs has been availabe for several years and many ISPs use this service to provide a Point-of-Presence (POP) in many areas of New Zealand.

Until now KCCS and Planet ISP (via a shared company Distributed Internet Ltd - DIL) have shared POPs at various locations.
Several of these smaller POPs are uneconomical due mainly to the high cost of providing equipment and a DDS link of some description to the POP. This is especially true where modem upgrades from 33k6 to 56k types is needed as this involves obtaining ISDN services which are often not available in all areas for a local POP.
In addition there are also continued enquiries from many areas without a DIL POP for higher speed modem connections.

In early June 2000 DIL has decided to use Telecom IPNet services to provide dial in services from anywhere in New Zealand. Initially thirty lines using the free dial 0873 number system will be available.
This service is also being made available to KCCS and Planet plus other ISPs and companies that connect to KCCS. Even before they are completely installed the thirty lines are committed to various ISP services so it is quite likely that further blocks of thirty IPNet lines will be added in the near future.

A new 2meg Frame Relay circuit has been installed at KCCS to deliver IPNet services to the KC network. This was commissioned on 6 August and with the installation of radius authentication servers at KCCS the IPNet services will be available within a few days (12 August 2000)

Enquiries for connection or other details about connecting to this IPNet numbers for KCS should be sent to: David Dix .
